lordie - homeopathy... the last refuge of the willfully ignorant.

The nub of the article is that parents choosing not to vaccinate are well-informed and smarter than average, and also have higher income levels.

None of these factors preclude them from making an incorrect decision, and may well influence them to make that decision.

Irrationality is not the sole preserve of the poor or dumb - in fact it could well be argued that teh poor and dumb have a far more rational understanding of life in general than hte well off as they are least insulated from its vissitudes.

Are the people choosing not to vaccinate ignorant? Soemtimes - they seem ot have a very poor grasp on statistics at hte very least.

Are they dumb - no, not in my opinion.

Fearful? No more or less than parents who vaccinate I suspect, just different fears.

But certainly irrational. The absolutism that is notable in these pages is evidence of that irrationality. There is excellent population level data that confirms the value of vaccination for certain diseases.

Some, less so.

A rational approach would be to evaluate the vaccinations one at a time and reject those that have proven questionable value, while accepting those with a long history of efficacy.

A marvelous article Sue, I am so glad I found the IAS information many years ago which enabled me to persue this subject and bring up 3 healthy boys without vaccinations or taking them to a doctor. In 20 or 30 years or so we will look back on this period of low pharmaceutical morality and equate it to the Blood Letting and Mercury medical practices of the middle ages. In fact when you look at it, orthodox medicine is still obsessed with Mercury and so are the authorities with long life light bulbs and Thimerosol.
Long live Homeopathy, and all forms of alternative medicine!

Amazing article, Sue!
